  • Great club act, with the beautiful Kitten Quinn on vocals and Ashley Slater plus two other renegades forming a tight horn section to accompany.
  • Formed in 2011, their first single "Don't You Worry" was signed by Hedkandi and is due for an early spring release.
  • Ashley Slater, tromboinst, DJ and prodcer, is best know for his collabrations with Norman Cook aka Fat Boy Slim in the 90's under the moniker FREAK POWER.
  • Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out was the biggest hit single for Norman Cook's dance-jazz group, Freak Power, released in 1993 as a single. The song features a smooth jazz sound and the baritone vocals of lead singer Ashley Slater. The single originally wasn't very well received, at least not commercially, only making number 29 in the UK However, two years later, the song was used in the popular Levi's advertisement "Taxi" and re-released in early 1995. This time, the single was a huge success, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart and was the only hit single for the group, but they still reached the Top 30 one more time in 1998.
  • Early in Ashley Slater's musical career, he lived in Northern Ireland where he regularly played trombone with the long established Otis And The Elevators as well as embellishing the brass section at the Sam Mahood and The Soul Foundation reunion gigs in the 1980's and ocassionally playing live with The Bank Robbers.
  • The flamboyant Ashley Slater was a founding member of the 80's free jazz collective Loose Tubes.

PRESS

  • “But despite its dancey character it still encapsulates what makes electro swing what it is; big beats with the effortless cool afforded by the arrangement and attitude of swing music. Stalwarts of the genre like Parov Stelar and Caravan Palace are still present, but the record also features remarkably new practitioners like Brighton’s Kitten & The Hip who formed only earlier this year, and who’s gypsy infused ‘By My Side’ is a highlight. ”

  • "new track 'Don't You Worry' by Kitten and The Hip is a glorious merging of dance music with big band jazz from the Swing Era. Jazzy female vocals and sax solos abound conjuring up wild imagery of Zoot suited dancers Cavorting. Very catchy and great to see the man that is Ashley Slater back in action."

BIOGRAPHY

One year ago, Ashley Slater met Kitten Quinn. Ashley was an ex pop star and Kitten was a beautiful and intelligent singer songwriter. They wrote songs together, they hung out, and they mischiefed. But mostly, they wrote songs together.

In February, they were having a chat, and Kitten advised Ashley not to worry about something or other. ‘Don’t You Worry About That’ was born the next day. A demo was sent to Carl Hanaghan, head of A & R at HedKandi records in London.

Less than half an hour later, the phone rang at Kitten HQ, the deal was made, the record was signed and the ball of yarn started rolling.

The single is out in September and is already creating a significant noise on the Electro Swing scene. There have already been license and synch requests, and it’s not even out yet.

Live, they are a quartet, with Kitten singing and Ashley and two brass monkeys playing horns all on top of pumping backing tracks. Kitten is a natural onstage, at once mesmerising and seductive.

It’s a party with class, so don’t forget your ass!
